About the University

Fast facts

Truly British experience: only 3% of students are from overseas.
Safe and interesting place to study.
Amongst top three most affordable in terms of cost of living (Sunday Times 2012).
5* rating in supporting students awarded by the British Quality Foundation.
Located in one of six heritage cities in the UK.

The University has two campuses – one in Chester and another in nearby Warrington. There are currently over 14,500 students at the University, which offers a warm and vibrant environment for students of all backgrounds and cultures.

Since opening in 1839, the Chester campus has grown and changed radically to become a modern, 21st century campus. Recent investment has seen the development of a brand new purpose-built students’ union facility, as well as a refurbishment of the learning resources centre.

Social and leisure activities are an important and long-established part of Chester campus life. On-campus sports facilities include squash courts, a fitness and leisure centre, swimming pool, sports hall and floodlit all-weather pitch. Most of the student accommodation is on or near the campus, which benefits from an abundance of green space, various cafes and dining halls, and a launderette. The campus is only a short walk from Chester city, which was founded as a Roman fortress nearly 2,000 years ago and has managed to retain its unique character whilst offering everything that you would expect from a modern city.

At Warrington, the University provides innovative, forward-looking courses with specific focus in two main areas: public sector and creative industries. The campus also offers excellent teaching, social and recreational facilities.

Student life

‘The University of Chester is a fabulous place to study. The lecturers and the University staff are very supportive and helpful; they are readily guiding us every step in our studies!’
Mei Tyin Low, Malaysia

The University of Chester offers you a fantastic experience both on and off campus.

Chester Students’ Union (CSU) exists to represent and support students at the University of Chester. As a member of the National Union of Students, the Union is run by students for students and everyone who joins the University automatically becomes a member.

CSU runs over 70 clubs and societies including sports (football, cricket, mountaineering, etc), music (rock, live music, etc) and general interest (drama, debating, literature, etc). There’s something for everyone to get involved in, but CSU will help you to set up your own club or society if your hobbies and interests aren’t already catered for by those that already exist.
